Disney's latest auto-cannibalism spree, Race to Witch Mountain, which also marks the continued castration of Dwayne Johnson's action/comedy career, made $25 million this weekend to take a weak number one spot, but despite that luke warm reception it wasn't the biggest loser.
Following Watchmen's admirable but unimpressive $55 million March opening, signs pointed to an early falloff. Fans gave it a big Friday night send off last weekend and then left it for scrap, leading to a painful 67% drop off into this weekend. With only $18 million this weekend, less than $120 million in total international sales to date, and a massive (and likely expensive) marketing campaign (not to mention the drawn out legal battles over its rights late last year) the movie looks to be in for a rough ride to turn Warner Brothers a meaningful profit against its $150 million budget.
Horror re-make Last House On The Left made only $14 million. It's a small number, but if the studio spent much more than that to actually make the film they pretty much wasted their money.
Raunch comedy, if you can even call it comedy, Miss March was fortunate enough to find two or three critics willing to admit they have poor enough taste in movies to give the flick a thumbs up, but it didn't fare so well at the box office. Despite a reasonably wide opening the movie banked less than $3 million and barely snuck into tenth place. With any luck freshman film director/writer team Zach Cregger and Trevor Moore won't be able to push a screenplay across another executive's desk for many decades to come.
