Weekend Box Office - Sex and the City

By Scott Gwin: 2008-06-01 21:51:07

After a rough start on Friday night when Sex and the City overpowered Kingdom of the Crystal Skull $26 million to $12 million, Indiana Jones charged back to earn more than the ladies of New York on Saturday and Sunday. Unfortunately, he didn’t make up the difference enough to reclaim number one for the weekend.

Sex and the City’s performance on Saturday was so bad that it was the only film in the top ten to drop in sales from Friday. Actually, it's rare for movies to loose ground going into Saturday making it all the more a Friday-night Girls-night fluke that Sex in the City did so well. The movie ended up with just over $55 million. That compared to Kingdom of the Crystal Skull’s $46 million which was a heftier drop than expected from the $100 million last weekend, the largest opening of the year to date.

The Strangers enjoyed a solid success as well, taking in over $20 million and third place, beating out long-timer Iron Man. Meanwhile Prince Caspian slipped underneath the Marvel hero. The latest installment in the Chronicles of Narnia series has begun to flounder under the weight of other large releases, casting doubts on its ability to live up to a $200 million budget. With only $115 million domestically and just over $160 million internationally, it’s going to be cutting it close to get into the black before making the jump to DVD.

  1. Theresa Elio Says:

This had to be the most overrated movie I have ever seen. A fashion show with costumes that were more than rediculous. Really no meaty plot and the sex was disgusting. What some actresses will do to make a buck. Doesn't anyone have any morals anymore?

Moview should have been rates XXX not R.

The movie industry has a lot of moral questions to answer.
