Weekend Box Office: Showers Of Success For Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 2

This weekend saw a strong finish to September as Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 2 snagged a strong first place, banking $35 million. That's a step up from the first mutated food adventure which had an opening weekend of $30 million in 2009.

Ron Howard's Rush expanded into wide release after a highly successful small opening last weekend, earning over $10 million. Internationally the movie has already earned $13 million, but even against a $38 million budget it's not set to rank among Howard's bigger box office earners.

Baggage Claim just eeked out fourth place over Don Jon, both of which came in at the $9 million range. That's good news for Don Jon writer/director/actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt who bank rolled his directorial debut for just $6 million.

Metallica Through the Never only opened in 300 theaters but it managed over $5,000 per screen. It fell short of making the top ten, but with an $18 million price tag it will have to maintain that level of success in wide release to turn a profit worthy of the band whose name it bears.
