The summer of sequels continues with Shrek serving up the latest third round helping. The ogre couldn't quite muster enough audience-love to topple Spider-Man 3's record breaking debut weekend, but the $122 million he made aren't too shabby. It's the best opening for a Shrek film so far and the second highest weekend opening of the year. Not bad for a movie that is clearly the weakest of the Shrek films so far. OK, that's just my opinion, but most people agree with me.
Shrek wasn't the only one doing solid business this weekend. Waitress, which has been making waves in very limited release, expanded to a little over 100 theaters but still managed to make it into the top ten. OK, so it only barely made it into the top ten, but if the expansion continues expect even greater things from the best movie few people are seeing in theaters right now.
Spider-Man 3 ended up having little to fear from fractured fairy-tale land, but on the horizon sails the real threat. Last summer Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest conquered the opening weekend record, but couldn't even hold it for a full year before Spider-man 3 toppled it. Now Captain Jack is back with his third installment and could yank the title back. Either way, we end up with a part three sequel in the record spot. But hey, this is America, what did you expect.
