In the relative doldrum between last weekend's release of Spider-Man 3 and next weekend's arrival of Shrek The Third, the fistful of new films made very small ripples in the ocean of the summer season. Add up everything they earned and it's barely more than one-third of what Spider-Man 3 made in it's second weekend out. Part of that is probably because most of those new releases are complete wastes of time and ticket dollars.
28 Weeks Later scared up $10 million to come in second place under Spider-man's weighty $60 million. Jane Fonda's new film tanked, brought down by the dead weight of Lindsay Lohan, earning only $5.9 million. Larry The Cable Guy's Delta Force received way more than it deserved at $3.5 million, coming in fifth place. The Ex suffered from a small release and non-existent marketing. It only scraped together $1.3 million and didn't even clear the top ten. For the complete top ten list check out the chart below.
Next weekend Shrek The Third gets the summer box office smash parade started again. Spider-Man 3 shattered box office records and set the performance bar exceptionally high. Can the big green guy out-gun the web slinger? If the last entries in the franchises are any indication, absolutely. Spider-man 2 opened at $88 million while Shrek 2 cleared $108 million. Next weekend will tell the tale.
This Weekend's Best Box-Office Dollar: Jane Fonda's paycheck for Georgia Rule. You couldn't pay most actors enough to make it worth working with party-girl Lohan.
This Weekend's Worst Box-Office Dollar: A ticket to see Delta Farce. You might be a red neck if you actually find the movie funny.
