Weekend Box Office - Stomp The Yard

By Scott Gwin: 2007-01-15 20:06:21

Is there a correlation between it being a holiday weekend honoring Martin Luther King Jr. and a movie with a predominantly black cast being number one at the box office? I'm going to opt that America is trying to move past the kinds of racist assumptions that Dr. King fought against and hope that the people marketing the film wouldn't shamelessly schedule its release for this weekend in hopes of getting people out to see an otherwise critically acclaimed disaster just because of the race of the cast.

Nevertheless, kids stomp dancing took top honors this weekend while the other new kids on the block, Alpha Dog and Primeval duked it out with Children of Men for places six through eight. Meanwhile Night At The Museum was finally unseated after three weekends at number one. With total domestic sales crossing the $190 million mark today, look for it to join 2006's $200 million club this coming week.

Next weekend The Hitcher, a "based on a true story" horror flick starring Sean Bean, is the only wide release hitting theaters. Don't worry though. With Oscar season upon us there are plenty of great movies that didn't get wide releases last year that are finally getting their due as nomination time approaches. I recommend The Queen and The Last King of Scotland.
