Weekend Box Office - Summer Goes Out With A Whimper![]()
This may have been the largest summer on record at the box office, but this weekend, which marks the official end of the movie summer season, was anything but hot.
With no new competition to speak of, last weekend’s top flick The Final Destination was once again top of the heap. Dropping 55% to an unremarkable $12 million it earned one of the lower Labor Day number spots in the last decade. Of the new arrivals comedy All About Steve fared the best. At $11 million it just beat out three weekend-old Inglorious Basterds for second place. Action flick Gamer came in at an embarrassing $9 million. That’s compared to last year’s convict-turned- death-match- reality-game-show-contestant movie Death Race which opened at a slightly less embarrassing $12.6 milion. Mike Judge proved once again that without Beavis and Butthead he just can’t get people in theatres to save his career. Extract bowed in at tenth place with only $4 million. That matches the opening of his 1999 comedy Office Space which would go on to make just $10 million in total sales. His last movie, 2006’s Idiocracy, did worse making only $450,000 total in very small release. For a little context, Beavis and Butt-Head Do America made more on its opening weekend ($20.1 million) than all of Judge’s other movies have managed in their full runs combined. No wonder poor Mike is looking to go back to animation’s two biggest dimwits…they may do very little to show off Judge’s actual comic talent, but at least they turn a buck. Check back tomorrow for the full four-day holiday weekend update. For the full weekend top ten check out the chart below.
