Weekend Box Office - The Brave One

By Scott Gwin: 2007-09-16 16:40:21

It was another big weekend for Jodie Foster as she continued her 21st century box office reign. The 1990's weren't kind to Foster with only one of the movies she headlined being the top movie on opening weekend. But since 2000 every single wide-release film starring Foster has debuted at the number one spot. Her latest flick, The Brave One, didn't disappoint.

The Brave One hauled in a mediocre $14 million but that was enough to make it the number one movie in America. Number two was 3:10 to Yuma which held up well into its second week, only dropping about 35% from last weekend (45%-55% is typical).

Two other movies that debuted this weekend, Mr. Woodcock and Dragon Wars. Woodcock took in $9 million to take third place while Dragon Wars followed right behind in fourth with a meager $5 million. Wars, however, stands out from the crowd because it's the one movie on the board that is a foreign movie in the states. Originating from South Korea's film industry, the movie already had $54 million in the bank before coming across the Pacific.

Next weekend Amanda Bynes opens her latest MySpace pimping movie with SYdney White, a comedy that, like her last one, rehashes an old story. Of course, it stands no chance against Dane Cook and Jessica Alba trying not to have sex in the painfully mismarketed Good Luck Chuck. Further competition will come from the the third entry in the action-horror video game franchise Resident Evil: Extinction. Look for Extinction to take number one.
