Weekend Box Office - The Other Guys Are Number One With A Rubber Bullet
Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg are notorious for at least going shirtless if not entirely naked in their movies. But in their first teaming, buddy cop flick send up The Other Guys neither shows so much as a chest hair. Please note, I'm not complaining, but it's just one thing you usually see in their movies that adds to them earning an R rating. Did they drop the tradition to keep a more box office friendly PG-13 rating for The Other Guys? If so, it was a waste of effort.
The $100 million movie only raised $35 million from audiences this weekend. The mediocre reception was still enough to finally bump three time champion Inception from its number one spot. Still, the win is more a reflection of the fact that there was nothing else for audiences to watch (after all, you can only see Inception so many times before your brain starts to spin out).
There was a new reason to hate both sequels and 3-D in theaters this weekend. Step Up 3-D, the third entry in a franchise that should have stopped at one, couldn't even crump its way into second place this weekend, instead making a weak showing at third place with only $15 million.
5 week old dramedy The Kids Are All Right, which has been slowly widening its release, finally banked enough attention to slip into the bottom of the top ten. The $2 million it earned this week added on to the $14 million it's banked so far, not bad for a movie made on a shoestring $4 million budget.
Toy Story 3 came that much closer to the $400 million mark, ending up just $4 million shy. With the painfully mediocre summer season on its way out the door there's been no competition for the Pixar flick which is the top earner for the year to date by a wide margin (Alice in Wonderland stands a distant second place at $334 million).
