The robots in disguise rolled out and over the box office this week, trading the opportunity to break opening weekend records in favor of another lesser cash achievement. Transformers took the top spot over the weekend with $67 million. That's a small number for such a major movie, but bear in mind that the weekend marked the end of Transformers' first week instead of the beginning.
Opening last Monday to the cheers of mindless action geeks and Transformers fans across the nation, what followed was a heavy opening week where the movie garnered biggest ever Tuesday opening ($27 million). That's not much of a bragging point since the only other movie in recent history to open on a Tuesday was the remake of The Omen. The movie also took the highest ever Tuesday, but again that's not saying much since Tuesdays are generally the slowest day at the cinema. If the movie hadn't opened on a Tuesday it probably wouldn't have ever come close to the record. Still, Transformers did well to recover its entire $150 million budget in the first week, raking in a hefty $152 million since early screenings on Monday. That has to be a huge sigh of relief for director Michael Bay whose last film absolutely tanked at the American box office.
Hidden heavily under the Transformers shadow was Robin Williams' much criticized License to Wed. It managed only $10 million over the weekend with the promise to disappear from theaters faster than a runaway bride.
On Wednesday the fifth installment in the Harry Potter septology, The Order of the Phoenix will unleash itself in American theaters. Even with an early opening expect it to easily take the number one spot, beating out the other new film, senseless gore fest Captivity which opens on Friday.
