First, they released photos, and a few of us were impressed. Then, they released a trailer, and none of us were impressed. Finally, we heard Wes Anderson was directing The Fantastic Mr. Fox via e-mail, and we were all pissed. No wonder the flick looked so awkward and not good, it was made free of the heart that Wes normally puts into his films. There were also whispers of animators being very unhappy with Anderson’s directing style and his lack of animation knowledge. It turns out, while all of these things were true, they may have all been part of Wes’ plan.
Wes Anderson spoke to the LA Times about his staff and his lack of presence on the set of the movie. "I didn't want to be at Three Mills Studios for two years,” Anderson stated about his absence. Instead, he holed himself up miles and miles away in Paris. In fact, Anderson believed that the casting, recording of the actors, and script were up to him and that the animation was up to the actors. So after he finished these things, he bowed out to Paris and waited for a finished product to review.
In response director of photography’s Tristan Oliver’s complaints about Anderson’s lack of knowledge of what’s possible with stop-motion, he responded, "It's not the most pleasant thing to force somebody to do it the way they don't want to do it.” He continued, “The simple reality is, the movie would not be the way I wanted it if I just did it the way people were accustomed to doing it. I realized this is an opportunity to do something nobody's ever seen before.”
There are definitely two very distinct sides to the argument at this point. While Anderson comes off a bit arrogant, we know now that he did what he did because he believed it was the best for the film. On the other hand, Tristan wanted a reasonable director who was hands-on and you know, present for the making of his film. But I guess we can’t really judge any of these actions until we see the movie. Maybe then we’ll be able to decide whether or not Anderson is as lame as he sounds.
