What's Loki Been Doing On Asgard? Tom Hiddleston Offers His Thoughts

Alan Taylor’s Thor: The Dark World ended with a rather intense cliffhanger. While the titular God of Thunder resigned the throne of Asgard so that he could be with his love, Jane Foster, he didn’t realize that he turned his resignation into the villainous Loki (who was taking the form of Odin). The events of The Avengers: Age of Ultron didn’t touch on what’s been going on in the kingdom, but apparently Tom Hiddleston thinks that his character is probably doing a bang-up job running the place.

Currently on the press tour for Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak, Hiddleston has had multiple opportunities in recent weeks to talk about his future as Loki and with Marvel Studios, but it was while discussing the role with Screen Rant that he talked about what the character has been doing with his time on the throne. At this time, he doesn’t actually know anything about his potential role in the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok, but when asked about what the God of Mischief has been up to other than pretending to be Odin, he offered this:

That’s all I know that he’s been doing. I mean, I’m interested to see what’s happened in the time between. I like to believe that actually he runs Asgard pretty well. The trains run on time and he keeps the streets clean. I honestly don’t know.

There are obviously many questions surrounding Loki’s behavior since Thor’s departure, but this quote brings up an interesting one: is Loki really still pretending to be Odin on Asgard? On the one hand, it does make sense that Thor wouldn’t be the only person he’d have to fool while sitting on the throne, as certainly there would be a lot of people who would take issue with him wearing the crown (Sif, The Warriors Three, and Heimdall being amongst them). That being said, one could also see Loki being so arrogant that he thinks Thor is really his only match and dropped the visage of Odin as soon as his brother went to Earth (to rule with an iron fist, of course).

We’ll have to wait a while before we get answers to any of our questions regarding the future of Loki… and not just because Tom Hiddleston doesn’t really know anything right now. Thor: Ragnarok will be the third Marvel Studios movie released in 2017 (after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and the Spider-Man reboot, and it’s really only now starting to turn its gears. In recent weeks we’ve learned that New Zealand director Taika Waititi is in negotiations to take the helm of the feature, but even that still seems to be just in the works. Hopefully we’ll get more details soon.
