Wheel Of Time Movie Coming

By Josh Tyler: 2008-08-13 00:02:03
Wheel Of Time Movie Coming The really strange thing about the success of Lord of the Rings is that it never translated into that new wave of adult oriented fantasy so many had predicted. Instead, it prompted Hollywood to run out and make a bunch of crummy, kid-oriented fantasies. Or maybe Harry Potter was to blame for that. Whatever the reason, Lord of the Rings still stands almost entirely alone when it comes to fantasy filmmaking for an adult audience.

They may be a few years too late, but somebody in Hollywood has at last had the sense to wake up to the potential of wizard movies for adults. Variety says Universal has acquired the rights to Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series. They’ll start working on adapting the first book in the bunch, The Eye of the World soon. It’s being produced in part, by the company that made graphic novel versions of the story, so at least there’s someone involved who is in some way familiar with the property.

If you haven’t read the Wheel of Time series, it’s worth a look… up to a point. Author Robert Jordan wrote a dozen books, but its really only the first 5 or 6 which are actually worth reading, assuming you don’t mind never getting any sort of ending. For me, the fourth was definitely the high water mark. The series tells the story of a boy named Rand al’Thor, who grows up with the rare ability to tap the “source”, a mysterious and incredible power. He and his friends are taken from their village by an Aes Sedai (their name for a female wizard) and head off for a date with destiny. The whole thing takes place in an alternate world which, particularly in the first book Eye of the World, blatantly borrows a lot of its best ideas from other fantasy literature, Lord of the Rings in particular. Once the first book is out of the way, Jordan does a better job of finding his own voice and his characters take on a life of their own. He has some pretty great, rather unique fantasy concepts too. For instance I've always loved the idea that the Aes Sedai aren't affected by cold, simply because they refuse to let it touch them. It's not magic, they just ignore it. For that matte,r there's really no magic anywhere in the book. Jordan's stories are set in a psuedo-medieval alternate world, but his approach to fantasy, magical powers is almost scientific.

Still, will it work as a movie? Wheel of Time fans were dealt a blow recently when author Robert Jordan died, before completing the series’ final book. Now the Wheel of Time will have an ending, but Jordan only had the book partially done and it’s being finished by a host of other people, including his wife. It’s somewhat ironic really, the big problem with the Wheel of Time series has always been that Jordan just didn’t know how to end it. It probably should have ended with book nine or ten, but Jordan kept finding excuses to drag the thing on and on. Long before Jordan's death, even some of the books’ most hardcore fans had jumped off the bandwagon. If Hollywood is serious about turning this into a franchise, hopefully they’ll have a better way to end it than dragging us through an endless series of dead-end character delays which really don’t matter.

  1. Fred Says:

I agree that the last few books have been way to non-central-story-driven - though in the big picture they are clearing up a lot of areas and allowing some areas to come into the fore-front only to be involved in the ending. Elaine Trakand's storyline coming into power as Queen is a little dragged out in my opinion, but was worth at least a few chapters. Not almost an entire book.

  1. Doug Says:

Wow, you are quite misinformed. Robert Jordan had the ending in mind, the final scene actually, before he ever wrote the first book. All the books in the series were just the journey to that final scene. Remember that expression, "it's not the destination, it's the journey"? Maybe in today's instant gratification culture that no longer applies. As for me? I enjoyed every word on that journey.

And as for finishing the series, Brandon Sanderson is the author chosen by Jordan's wife to finish the series. Robert Jordan made meticulous notes and Sanderson is following them closely. You can follow his progress here: http://www.brandonsanderson.com/blog/category/40

  1. Matt V. Says:

I have to disagree with you. Books 1-8 are all good. 9 and 10 go at an extremely slow pace, but book 11 (Knife of Dreams) is every bit as good as the first books.

  1. Marlin Says:

The series is terrific, even past the first six books, though I believe he hit a peak at book 6, the rest of the series are just as important to the storyline as the first five books. His layers and layers of world-building and detail are exquisite. The most recently published Knife of Dreams is as good as any in the series.

I don't know how they will make this into a movie though. We fans have been speculating about a movies since 1996, but I don't know how well they will translate into film.

  1. scott Says:

i am a big fan of the wheel of time series and enjoyed all of the books. there are boring parts in all of them but esential to the story none the less. i only just saw that there was a chance they were being made into a film and cannot wait.

  1. Matt Says:

I wouldn't be surprised if they make a movie adaption of the first book and leave it at that. That is, if they can even get the movie done before I die.

  1. Kris Says:

Jordan was probably one the best if not the best fantasy writers I have had the pleasure of reading. From what I saw, as his health deteriorated, it appeared that he was pressured by the publications company to "get the series done". That is the only explanation for books 9 and 10 being as fragmented as they were. Knife of Dreams was right back on course with what I came to expect from him. The Web within a Web within a Web that he weaves is extraordinary. There are several cases in which an alert reader can pick out one line from, say, book 1, for instance, and in book 7 it will have a great impact. To me that is not an example of trying to draw from other authors until finding one's own style.
I have to say that I am not sure on this series being made into a Movie. I think there is way to much that will have to be cut out to make the Big Screen. I think the better solution would be a solid HBO series more like Band of Brothers, or along that style. To do this right you would need somewhere in the neighborhood of about 48 hours(or more) of finished tape. Not gonna happen in the movie industry.

  1. AJ Says:

Ok first off, you butchered the summery of the Wheel of Time. And second, it is foolish to make a movie out of the Wheel of Time. This is only going to be a butcher's. In the Wheel of Time as many of you readers have missed, every small and BORING part of that story builds up to a giant ball of an event. Do you honestly think the film makers will allow those parts in? No. And you agree with them not being there. Why? Because you think that it is over drawn. I guarantee that when this movie is made and they leave out those fun boring parts and they get to major events the audience will be like..."Why did that happen?" Personally I demand that if they are going to make this into a movie that they have Brandon and RJ's wife help and co-direct the thing. Otherwise they will fail and destroy a great story.

  1. andy Says:

i have been reading this series since book one came out in hard cover and i have read the intermittent books repeatedly while waiting for the next installment. yes it can seem a bit slow at times but i think AJ made the point in the last post.
every word is necessary to reach that last page which is the first page robert jordan came up with

  1. Bret Says:

WoT is the best fantasy series I have ever read. Making it into a movie would leave too much out and most fans would be sorely disappointed by the lack of content. Part of what makes the series so great is the in depth layers within the storyline. The way to go is to make the books into a mini-series such as Taken, or Rome etc. Anything less than 20-30 hours would be a travesty.

    mini-series!!!!!!!!

Either way, I am sure the fans who have stuck with the series will buy the series on DVD's along with others who are intimidated by the thousands of pages to read but are interested in the epic. I bet the dvd sales will equal any book sales. It is a shame Robert Jordan died before the series was finished. I actually had the opportunity to meet him once at a book signing in NC back in either 97 or 98 and still have two of his books autographed!

  1. Scott Says:

I'm a huge fan of the series and am deeply disappointed to hear of a movie adaptation.

  1. dan Says:

im a big fan of all of the wheel of time books, sometimes it gets a little bit slow, but everything is important even if you dont realize it untill several books later. to me thats what makes them some of the best books ive ever read. having said that, i, among many others, think a live action movie would be great. ofcouse they'll have to leave things out, but if you read the books, then you still know whats going on. people who havent read the books wont really know the difference anyway.

no offense, but it kinda sounds to me like you had a very brief conversation with someone about the books and just took their word for it. the article seems really ill informed. if you take the time to read the books and pay attention to everything, you would probably have a different outlook.

  1. sonjak Says:

First off, did the author of the above jem actually read the books? I just don't feel love. The Wheel of time is and excellent sereis and one you have to take on the whole.
    anyhoo
I think that it could be time for Eye of the World. We just might be at a point in technology where this fantasy world could translate to the big screen. They really are doing some kickass things with special effects. (ref - eragon, the covanant, constantine, hellboy to name a few). I do however tend to agree that maybe a mini-series would be a better format to get the story done right. THe story is the most important part - the long and the short of it.

  1. Phoebe Says:

I agree that a series would be better, but a full length series. It's not exactly a mini series in book form. There's just so much detail. Also, the guy who wrote this article MUST not have read the books. Maybe he read the cliffs notes. If there are cliffs notes for them. It is very close to my heart, and one of the best series I've ever read. It's up there with Dune, and Dune is up there.

  1. mac J Says:

I really liked the book whether jordan dragged it or not. He really had the grip in the story as he brought so many characters in it. It could never been completed in 8 or 9 books. So many stories to tell, how can anyone just leave it and complete it. I am really waiting for the last instalment and as i work in the library i know many readers ask me the same question. Hope the movie would do justice with the book. But whatever may come i really want to see the characters of the book come alive.

  1. Jess Says:

Wheel of Time is by far one of the best series out there. I agree with nearly everyone who commented. Robert Jordan knew the end when he started the series. RJ is a incredibly talented writer and every last detail in the story is much appreciated by me. I love the fact that he took his time on the series. Quite frankly, I wish the story would NEVER end. It's kind of sad knowing the end is coming!
If I had to choose, I'd pick a mini-series over a movie. Unless of course, Peter Jackson will direct the movie. LOL!

  1. James Says:

I agree it should be a full series or at least a mini-series. If they are going to make a movie it needs to be a series of movies like LOTR. I don't want WOT to turn out like Eragon. Eragon was a good series (though a lot of it is copied from other authors) but the movie turned out to be 60% special effects and 10% story line. They took out so many key elements and changed so much it didn't make coherent sense. It would be absolutely tragic for WOT to end up the same way.

  1. Eden Says:

Did you read the books, Josh? Any of them?

    That is all.

  1. JoshT Says:

I have read EVERY SINGLE book, including New Spring.

Just because I've read them doesn't mean I have to like them as much as you do.

  1. Gavin Says:

The movie will destroy the wheel of time series making people hate the movie and not read the books. I stongly agree about the HBO series. By the way I have never meet any one who likes the series little alone heard of it, and it would be nice to chat with someone that remotly share the same intrests as me. Email me. Gavinh1000@yahoo.com

  1. SK Says:

I did feel that the books 9 & 10 dragged a bit (but only beacause I had to compare it against the rest of the books which are brilliant,a case of gold appearing dull next to a polished diamond).
But I discovered that this books are quite interesting in more ways than one during my second read through the series ,infact I would say they are essential to the series keeping the ship from floating away from its destination.
I was so fascinated by what I discovered during my second read that I started allover again, this time taking it really slow and guess what I still ran through the books !!These books get more fascinating the more you read them and you start to get a picture of the pattern being woven by the wheel throughout the series and the relevance of books 9 & 10 only increases.
To the skeptics I can only recommend that you plunge into the series once again , and judge for yourselves.
Trust me you will see books 9 & 10 in a whole new light by the time you finish!

  1. Olaf Says:

**BREAKING NEWS** Peter Stormare has signed on to play al’Lan Mandragoran

  1. David Says:

The most important aspect of Jordan's writing has always been his character development. If anyone is to show the depth of Jordan's characters and world, I'd be hard pressed to believe it's possible in a movie format. I'm all for HBO budget series, each book could be release as a 2 hour 3+ part series. This may lead to something moderately acceptable to Jordan's fan base. Regardless, whatever is done must include Harriet or I could see no way that an acceptable outcome could arise from this epic quest.
    Viva Jordan's Memory of Light

  1. Eleanor Says:

I agree with Doug and AJ.
A movie would DESTROY the fantasy. They would miss the subtleties that I so enjoyed discovering. People wouldn't even bother to read the books if a movie came out. People would look different to how I imagine them, and everything would change. I personally don't want to have to put up with american accents!
Also, I enjoyed every word!!!! Nothing is too dragged out in the wheel of time, nothing! The prologues are all vital, so anyone who skips them is a moron.
If it was possible I would live the rest of my life in the wheel of time.

  1. Blade Says:

I have read the series severl time and I can not get enough of it. Thought I will have to agree with the die hard dans they have to make it a mini series to a full one. You just can not get the first book in two or even 3 hours for every thing that goes on in it, but if you take 6 hours atlest then you can get about 70% of the book in to it.

  1. gavin Says:

well first off you have to understand that if they do decide to make a movie, mainstreem media will not just cater to long time readers they will want to get a whole new fan base. therefore the movie will have to take a lot of cuts in contint. then if the movie goers want more they will have to spend even more money and buy the book sets. this i just how the world runs my friends

  1. Nastia Says:

What you are writing in this article it is not true. First - all books are outstanding, second – Robert Jordan always knew the end of the WOT; he even said that from the first book he knew the last scene of series. So, they have to make not one movie, but several to show the whole amazing world of WOT.

  1. Steven Says:

I just wanted to say, that I personally look forward to the movie, I'm a movie lover as well as a book lover. There are a ton of books that have been made into movies, I saw "I Am Legend" before reading the book. As a matter of fact, seeing the movie made me WANT to read the book. The same goes for "Jumper" by Steven Gould. Fantastic movie, and seeing the movie made me just have to read the book. When LOTR came out in cinemas, You can bet that there were a billion people who saw that movie that hadn't hardly touched a book in their life, that went and read LOTR. Same goes with Harry Potter. All I'm trying to say is, I really dont think that a movie being made of this wonderful book would butcher it too bad. I think Robert Jordan would have many more readers after the movie. At this moment I'm in the middle of book 11 from the WOT series and a movie would be more then anticipated by myself and tons of others. As a fan I think seeing the genius of Robert Jordan's words come to life would be incredible. I would like to see more people pick up books. Movies help. Believe it or not.

  1. MB Says:

I'm sure the movie will fail to capture the true majestic of WoT the RJ created, but it might be worth watching as a movie. I am also a major fan of the inheritance trilogy (eragon) which the movie was disappointing to me unless I looked at it as a movie. I will most likely watch the movie but im not to sure on how it will turn out.

  1. JKW Says:

Ok first off I have been a fan of the series since around the seventh grade when I first got into reading and in the past years have watched many book series like WoT be turned into movies and personally though I know how they have to gut the books to make them fit into a reasonable time slot, it has been clear that with some if not most it has actually made the books worse to read after because all I can remember while reading them is what a travesty the movie turned out to be. It is in my opinion that while it would be nice to see WotT as a movie in some form or another, whether an actual big-screen movie or a tv mini series, that it is just not worth it to ruin such a great series like this.

  1. Robin Says:

The wheel of time is the best fantasy series I have ever read. When Robert Jordan died last year I almost started crying. I just for some reason must know how it ends. I really hope that they dont screw up this movie/Tv-series or whatever they are planning.

  1. Alyssa Says:

I am a big fan of this series. I enjoyed ever last book. Yes, in books 9 and 10 it did get a bit dragged out, but it never stopped me from reading, or got me un-interested. Long series tend to always have parts like that. And I can't wait for the movie, although I must say, after the Eragon movie, I'm going to be a bit cautious about how excited I get. I don't want to be disapointed. I hope for the best though.

  1. AJ Says:

wow... I think that your are lost. Jordan had written the majority of the last book before passing and dictated the rest to the Author and on tape before passing away. I think this series has been thrilling and interesting since book one, and I am still having a hard time finding a book to read while I wait for book 12. In fact I feel lost without the wonderful writing of Jordan. Lastly I think it is nearly impossible to not see some of Lord of the rings in almost any Fantasy Fiction that is just what happens when you are regarded as being the creator of an entire genre. Read the entire series and then comment on it.

I am not sure that a movie is the best idea. That is a lot of movie or a lot of story left out. I guess the one thing that would help is that a lot of what Jordan wrote was detail so that will shorten how much book they really need to cover, but still not sure if a movie will work.

  1. Joel Says:

try reading mistborn and elantris by brandon sanderson. i can say he's nearly as good as robert jordan. if not slightly better

  1. fan Says:

have you read the series? I highly doubt it unless perhaps your mind is so degraded that it cannot sense the build up of anticipation throughout the entire series. Robert Jordan had extremely detailed notes on all of the major parts and resolutions in the final book so if it does not hurt that decayed mind of yours too bad I would suggest getting your information straight before mindlessly offering it as fact. I have always wished they could make a movie on this the greatest fantasy series ever written in my opinion, but I am afraid the will mess it up horribly. Everyone needs instant action and gratification because like you they lack the mental capacity to appreciate the small and extremely relevant parts that are not jam packed with action. This may be the best series ever written period, he wrote with an unprecedented level of intelligence and foresight. There were things vaguely referenced in the first book that did not reappear until a knife of dreams and only those who appreciated the small not so "cinematic" parts of the books would even realize. I love the Great game and I highly doubt that they will be able to portray how much of a role it played in the entire series. I do sincerely hope they can make this work, and I will watch it as soon as it comes out.

  1. Barbara Craig Says:

I have not read all the books yet, but The Wheel of Time is one of the richest fantasy stories I have ever read. I love the details, and the characters. As for making a movie, I would love to see it done, but I am afraid the story will be a mess. Look what happend to Eragon. Destroyed. If Wheel of Time is to be done well, and be true to the story, it should be a television series. We would have YEARS of a great story, and it would not have be chopped up to fit in the 90 minute window.

  1. Wolfie Says:

If they made the whole series into movies each would have to be 2.5 to 3 hours long AT LEAST to get all the detail, and many parts in the later books wouldn't make sense without those little details. The money required to make the 12 or 13 movies would be HUGE! I don't think they're going to be willing to put that much money into it unless it turns out to be the next LotR, and I just know it wouldn't be worth watching if they keep so much as one bar over production. Every person involved must be as carefully chosen as the Disciples. E.g, Rand MUST be tall, Egwene and Nyneave MUST be short and beautiful, and every actor must be the cream of the crop, the best of the best. No effort not made. It has to be PERFECT, and perfection is almost impossible.

  1. fan Says:

I agree it would be alot better if they were to make this into a television series, but as Wolfie said, they would have to still spend a huge sum of money to make this work and they will need to be true to every single small and seemingly insignificant detail which turns out to be major in the later books. I would love to see it as a movie, but i do not think that it will do the books justice. I personally would not mind both, introduce the movies, then if they hit big, which if they do the work it will, release a TV series.

  1. RIP.RJ Says:

I agree with a lot of people that a movie would most likely ruin the books - a HBO series is a good idea, but has anyone thought about an anime/animation series? Surely it wouldn't cost as much to produce (especially with all the special effects needed) and it would be easier to emulate the thoughts and actions of the characters. Besides, anime series can run for ages - look at Bleach!

    Just a thought...

  1. MGregorySr Says:

I bought The Eye of the World when it first came out and have made it a practice to re-read the entire series every time a new volume was added. While both LoR and WoT are both great works of fiction, to my way of thinking the WoT series far surpasses the LoR series.

It seems to me that the ONLY way that justice can be done to the WoT series is to make each book into a 6-10 hour mini-series.

  1. brett Says:

Disagree on the dragging out of the series. Book 5&6 were to of the best. It always seem to me he never thought the series would be as good as it was and planned to end it earlier. I like the way it became more realistic in the later books (relatively speaking), I always enjoy the character development more than the storyline. I've read the series about 6-8 time through, (I was sailing around the world book were in short supply, but time wasn't), it always seemed to me that it would have to go to 12-13 books to finish up all the story lines I still feel that last book will have to at least a 1000 pages to really rap it up well. The las few books dragged a bit but as a fan of character dev. I really enjoyed mulitdemensality of the characters.
Movie- better as a TV series to much for a movie- mini series would be best.
I'm a little worried about the fact that Sanderson seems really interested in that Perrin Story line, as I find that the least interesting one of the bunch.

  1. Tony5fingaz Says:

The Wheel of Time is not Eregon or The Golden Compass. It is not a young adults/children's story. So there should be no fear of it being made that way as a movie. The chances of it being made as a miniseries are miniscule(though I beleive an HBO series would be the best way to go). Wot is my favorite series, knowing that a film would have to leave out many things, there would be no better way to honor RJ, than to have these books made into movies. The Eye of the World I read when it was released in hardcover in the late 80's, and because of that book, I became an avid reader.

Complain after you see it, until then, I hope that it is made into a film. C'mon, be optomistic!

  1. timmyc Says:

I have only read the first seven books of the WOT series, and I have enjoyed them all. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the books. I have read slow books before, for example Tom Clancy's Red Rabbit, that almost killed me. LOL. But Still I would love to see a an Eye Of The World movie. But it all depends on who you get to direct, write, produce, and to act and so on. No doubt they would have to chop the book up for a movie. You would end up with a eight hour movie. So Hollywood definetly wouldn't go for that. For me, Peter Jackson would be a great director for the movie. He and all those who were involved with The Lord of the Rings, did a great job taking out certain parts of the book and still making the movie as close to the book as possible. You can't have your cake and ice cream to when it comes to Hollywood productions. But a miniseries is possible. It just depends on who you have to do the production of the series. They are trying it with "Legend of the Seeker" a.k.a The Wizard's First Rule. We will just have to wait and see.

  1. Supersix1 Says:

I believe it is a testament to Mr Jordans immense ability as an author that so called critics struggle to find anything not readily dismissable to say about The Wheel of Time Series. Perhaps if The League of Rather-ordinary 'Gentlemen' Critics could move with the times and disobey their Law of Precedent they might be able to read beyond book 4??

  1. Matt K Says:

The last book, A Memory of Light, is not "being finished by a host of other people, including his wife." Brandon Sanderson is finishing the novel on his own based on notes, outlines, dictations and completed portions that Jordan provided. Jordan's wife, Harriet, has been the editor for the Wheel of Time since the beginning of the series and her input, if not creative consultation, have always been a part of the series. Additional consultants are being used for continuity purposes.

  1. Dan D Says:

I have read all of the books 3 times and I agree that they are one of the best fantasy series out there right now. I was greatly saddened when Robert Jorden passed away and then was relieved when Brandon Sanderson was picked to finish the book. However, unlike most of the posters here I am not to worried about the movie. Remember one of the things that Robert Jorden was amazing at was the level of detail throughout all of the books, everything was well described and that took up space. In a movie all of those descriptions are eliminated because they are in the set, so while there is still alot of dialog the book are actually much shorter then they seem. I just hope if they are going to do them they do them all and do them justice.

  1. Jack Says:

I agree with so many others before me, reducing this brilliant series into a 120 minutes (if that) of film is revolting! Jordan was a MASTER of detail and that detail is paramount to the story. The only way to adapt his work visually is either a series or mini series. Period.

  1. Samantha Says:

I havn't finished reading all of the books yet, Im only on book 5, and i love them all.
I agree that it would be hard to make it into a movie....cause of all the detail and scenes....But it would make great entertainment....and to be honest with you i would deff audtion if it comes to Britain.
I think that maybe it would be better and also easier to make it into a tv series instead of a movie.

By the time they actaully start to make the movie or series I might be old enough to play one of the young girls...like Min or Egwene or something. Mean like Im only what 14 years of ages now and i love reading big chucky fantasy books. IM A FANTASY GEEK!!! No seriously i am!! XD

  1. Trisha Says:

I only hope they don't go animated I was so dissapointed with the fact they did the clone wars in animated I wont even watch it. Wheel of time books are all great some in more detail than others but the details are what make the story so much more like a real world. Life has its boring parts so does some of the story but thats what makes the story more than just a story. Age turns to ledgend so does the wheel of time I still pick up the books and re-read them on a regular basis.

  1. Nick Says:

I'm just going to throw this out there but no one would ever try to cram the series into 1 movie. Likely each book would have it's own 2+ hour movie, and that is plenty of time to adapt any single book into a movie as long as talented people are the ones doing the adaptation. Any movie or mini series could suck or be great it would all depend on the people that were making it. It would take someone who is devoted to making a great adaptation while not being a slave to the original material. It's odd that out of every medium I find it is book lovers who can not stand to see an adaptation of their favorite material, because they want it to keep everything exactly the same as in the book, or it won't be how they pictured it when reading. Why can't the two exist as separate entities that can each be enjoyed for there own merits?

And just so you know I love the wheel of time series I rank it right up next to Lord of the Rings and Dune. It is one of the best fantasy series I've ever read.

Yes i am a huge lover of RJ's world and would like to see it come to life on the tv. Unlike most of the people that have posted here, i see it as very achievable. From what i read above, taking mostly from Wolfie and Nick I would postulate that the best way for them to do this is as a WHOLE book series instead of just one at a time, and break that down into a series just like any other tv series. Now as a twist to this based on what Wolfie said "perfection being almost unatainable" i would like to see this done in a format much like the Beowolf movie. This way you can cast your characters now and not have to worry about their age becomeing a factor on screen after 5 seasons or so of filming.

I understand that this is isn't a widely used format or widely loved for that matter, but i could see it solving many problems. From magical powers to landsacpe that just doent exist or even towns and armies, it would provide the semi real feel while not feeling like a cartoon from the 80's. I also understand it is relatively expensive to produce and may not be feasible but in the long run i think it could be the best solution to all problems.

The series are too long? He 'drags' the story for commercial benefit?

I hope there will be another 12 books, whether it will be about the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th age, or prequels, or sequels, or other story lines, as long as there is more to read. It would be worth every single dollar/Euro spent on it.

There were a lot of fans complaining about the Lord of the Rings films. I didn't read the books before I saw those movies, and those films are the best I've ever seen. But I understand what the readers and fans think about information left behind. I do like to see the movie(s) when it's completed, and I hope that I can enjoy the movie because for me, more Wheel of Time is more fun. The Wheel turns: there is neither beginning NOR ENDING. So I hope it never ends.

the eye of the world is the perfect book to choose for a movie, as for the rest of the books well.. no comment lol

  1. Geoff Taylor Says:

I just put my bookmark in at chapter 10 of book 10. Books 1 - 6 may be GREAT books, with 7 and 8 being a little bit lesser but I thoroughly enjoyed book 9 and book 10 is getting of to a good start.

  1. planeswalker Says:

hahaha! You have got to admit josh tyler... you failed in reading the book. you're not a good book critic. to think of his work having some boring parts! damn, sink every phrase in each chapter deep into your mind and you'll realize that it is related to the next books. Read well my friend. read well. :)

  1. Revaria Says:

I am rather exited by the idea of a movie being made out of the series.
The only problem that i see is the danger of destroying the storylines essential parts as they try and abreviate the script. So many productions have done this with adaptations in the past and it would be a real shame to see it happen here.

    PS
i also have to disagree with the article above. Although book 10 was an almost unending lesson in tedious reading, books 1-9 and 11 were great and my hopes for the success of book 12 are very high.

The last few books have been a cliffhanger but are leading up to the big finish with plots developing but it will be worth it when it comes to Tarmon Gadin. I share some worries with the other posts that they wont be able to catch the emotion and some thoughts that are unsaid, allong with Emotions and fealings that Perrin can smell are important. And I don't want it to be to badly CGI'd becouse I have a fealing they are going to overdo it, but to show casting weaves I think it would fit well. Whatever they do I still think it may be best left as a book, but who knows I may end up takeing it back.

  1. Webspeeder Says:

If you take the book for what it is, the entire series is worthwhile to read. Of course, any series has books that are "better" than others, but I thoroughly enjoyed every book in the series.

The real question regarding adapting it to a movie is whether or not the makers will be willing to put in the time and $$ required. If they do it right, it can be good. As long as they don't jump from book 1 to book 4 etc. They need to capture the books as written to be good, otherwise they'll be junk.

Also, you have to realize that many of the pages in the book are dedicated to describing the environment/what people are wearing etc. As they say, a picture is worth 1000 words so a movie that is well done can easily fit all the content into reasonable length movies.

I would say make as much of a movie as needed per book and if need be, make 1 book into two movies. I'd rather see many well done, content-filled movies that half-baked movies made simply to turn a buck.

If Jordan's wife has a say in it, the movies will be done correctly. She is/was Robert's editor so she knows how things are to be done.

  1. Webspeeder Says:

Also, for a movie based on the WoT to work, the casting is absolutely critical. They need Rand to be 6'4' - 6'6", same with Lan and the Aiel.

They need to have Moraine be shorter than normal too. I think the difficult part will be finding all the gorgeous women who can act.

Anyway, it is due out in 2011 per imdb.com. You need IMDB Pro to access it, but it is slated to be made. I don't have too high of hopes for the movie though, they won't put the $$ into it that is needed. Instead, they'll be looking to make as much money off it as possible. Maybe after the feature length version fails, they'll make a min-series out of it. But even then, too much CGI will ruin it too, especially if it is poorly done.

I guess we'll find out in a few years.

the wheel of time is a tremendiously complex series. like any book series, the quality of the book depends a lot on the writer, and almost ewually on the reader. so it doesnt come as a suprise some strong supporters jumped off the band wagon. as robert jordan- may he rest in peace- wrote more and more of wot, his style of writing changed subtley, but it still made a HUGE difference in the quality.
that being said, wot is the best fantasy series i've ever read. i dont believe he use ANY sort of structure closely relating to the lord of the rings. even though tolkien wrote the essay that gave the setting for wot. the wot world is all its own. the detail and specifics and the histories light the series up like the sun. and i love how you can see the characters change. how they grow as individuals and how their priorities change.
anyway i thought id just put my two bits in. to sum it up, wot is orgasmic, i wish jordan had lived to complete the series (and wish hariet my best), and im anxious and nervous to see the cast for the movie.

  1. Bleakmage Says:

When I first started reading those books, they were one of the greatest reading experiences I ever had. Somewhere along the way, it turned into a snorefest. . .sigh. I think I've read enough the books that if there is an ending he had in mind, I just want to read that. He went from a great writer to a milkmaid. I wish he had finished it so he could have done something else. A movie or two will be a nice thing to see, but I"m sure they'll get old after Episode 100 as well. . . :D

  1. Liz Says:

It's just so relieving to find an extraordinary book that seems to stand on its own. I'm only at book 3 right now and I don't want to spoil what i'll discover in reading while i'm online..the joys of reading!
I think Jordan has created this series tremendously, though I too was shocked when Id discovered it went on to 11 books, as of now. I can't wait to finish the series even before the movie gets out, if it will get out and if it'll be worthy enough.

  1. Amanda Says:

You are completely wrong... The last books were some of my favorites. The problem wasn't with the books, it was the length of the story. Each book took 2 years. When book 6+ came out, I had to re-read the whole series to capture where I left off. I had to do this with each additional book.

  1. Mark Says:

Personally, given the drawn out pace of the book, leading too climatic conclusions too plot twists, the best option for this novel series is a television series. can you think of one series that didn't include and drag out all the plot twists as well as Robert Jordan.

  1. b1pig Says:

I came to this series late. I was never much of a reader beyond magazines. My introduction came when I had to take The Eye of the World from a Geocache can in order to place a travelbug. I had no other choice and took the book with me. 3 months later, I began reading Book 1 and never stopped. I searched for Book 11 locally and couldn't get it. (I didnt preorder) To my luck, soon after the realease, I got it in hardback in a little book store in the middle of Utah.

THAT is how good of a series it is. Yes, there are some slow points. Take even the slowest book and compare it to other books in a series. It is only paled in comparison to others that Robert Jordan completed. I also agree that the writer of the commentary did NOT read the book(s), or was forced to and it isnt their cup of tea. I can't see the series coming down as a one-time movie. There is just too much going on. A mini-series would be more likely. I seriously doubt any company would take on a project as lengthy as it would take to cover in fearture films only. Though I have not read J.R.R. Tolkien's books which spawned the LOTR movies, I hear that there was a fair amount of things that had to be shortened, left out or skipped completely.

  1. Eli Says:

I have been in love with this series for a while, and think it would be great as a film. I know that they would have to cut some of the finer points out, but The base plot is enough that it would attract crowds. In fact, I think that if they toned down some of the more intense scenes, (i.e., The Far Snows scene) they could make the series popular with teens.

  1. Corletta Says:

There is no such thing as a diehard fan of Jordan's that jumped off the bandwagon! The man was a literal genius! Reading the series changed my life and my view of history and the world! His story is a rich and fascinating tapestry that is downright ethereal. It touches you on so many levels. It is so BIG! So big in fact that even a movie series done on the level of Peter Jackson's LOTR may give it a smattering of justice. But it deserves to come to the big screen if someone who loves the story as much as Jordan's true fans do has a hand in its direction.
