I'm not sure if I should be comparing Tyler Perry to Adam Sandler or to Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer. In regards to the former, both create calculated genre films that pull in expected and respectable numbers for each box office outing. But, in regards to the latter, both work within an overly-formulaic series that’s seemingly churned out by an automaton. Seriously, the sheer speed with which Perry's films are cranked out is frightening—same with the Movie Movies. Lionsgate, the company behind both series, has clearly perfected the formula: markedly tiny budgets and poorly written films poised to exploit built-in audiences.
With this said, I am here today to give you fine folks a sneak at Perry's new concoction of awesomeness: the trailer for Why Did I Get Married Too?. The entirety of the original cast has returned for this sequel to Why Did I Get Married (2007), including Janet Jackson for whom, according to Radar, production was halted due to Michael Jackson's sudden death.
The film blasts onto screens April 2nd, 2010. Check out the trailer below:
Maybe the ludicrous score and editing is a tongue-in-cheek message to the critics—you know, something along the lines of “Yeah, these films are horrible. No, really, they’re horrifying—even our trailers will scare the crap out of you.”
But I don’t want to bash the Perry series much further, as we all know it’s intimately targeted toward a particular audience, and it’s clearly doing its job well. The numbers are solid; the man is doing something right. Then again, it could be easily argued that his films are doing to African Americans what Friedberg and Seltzer’s films are doing to twelve-year-old boys: exploiting both their boredom and their eagerness for a cinema catered explicitly to them. The question then arises, How disappointed are members of both groups at each outing?
