Thus far in the brief yet insanely over-reported history of the Twilight saga, a new director has been selected for each outing, either because a new kind of vision is required or the first director was a crazy person, depending on who you ask.
Would they really break tradition in order to rehire Chris Weitz, who was in charge of New Moon? Damned if anyone is telling. Weitz did an interview with THR in which they asked point blank if he had been asked to return for the fourth film, Breaking Dawn, and he hedged like a master:
No official offer has been made. The fans have been enthusiastic about the footage and the trailer, and the studio responds to that by feeling good about me. We'll have to see how people feel about the entire movie, not only the studio but the fans, before the verdict is out whether I direct Number 4. David Slade is doing a great job on the third film, and by the time that comes out, he'll be the flavor of the moment.
Yeah, there's not a single answer in there, especially given that the official word is that they don't even know if they'll make a fourth film (ha!) Having not seen New Moon and having no idea what Weitz did with the material, I'd rather see someone else take on the challenge-- maybe another woman even? I'd love to see how Julie Taymor could handle the crazy-ass birth scene I've been promised by Twilight-reading family members.
