Danny Boyle may not be done with India. Chronicling the misery of life in the country’s slums for Slumdog Millionaire won him an Oscar, so it makes sense that he might want to go back. The Wall Street Journal says he’s recently bought the film rights to a book set in the country. It’s called Maximum City: Bombay Lost and Found.
Boyle has actually talked about the book before, mentioning it as a guide he used in making Slumdog. The 2004 book by Indian born journalist Suketu Mehta actually seems fairly similar to Boyle’s poor kid wins big story. It’s nonfiction, a narrative in which Mehta writes about Mumbai from the perspective of someone who was born there, but has since moved away and become an outsider. He meets with murderous gangsters as well as prominent politicians in his quest to give a complete picture of Mumbai as a city.
Since Boyle has already admitted he used Maximum City as sort of a Bible while making Slumdog Millionaire, there’s another possibility here. I smell lawyers. Perhaps he bought the rights not because he wants to make a movie out of it, but because he’s already made a movie out of it and doesn’t want to get sued for any similarities between this book and Slumdog. Or, maybe he really is just completely obsessed with Mumbai. Enjoy yourself Danny, but I don’t plan on vacationing there.
