Will Ferrell And Zach Galifianakis May Play Political Candidates In 2012 Comedy
Good political comedy is always necessary, but that goes double in an election year, when we're so overwhelmed by all the depressing stuff about politics that we're positively desperate for a laugh. That explains the tremendous success of Tina Fey's Sarah Palin impressions, or going back even further, Will Ferrell's absurdist skewering of George W. Bush, an impression that transferred for a short run on Broadway in 2008.
Ferrell hasn't shown an interest in political satire beyond his Bush impression, but that may be about to change. According to Deadline, Meet the Parents and Dinner for Schmucks director Jay Roach is interested in putting Zach Galifianakis and Will Ferrell together in a political comedy about two candidates running against each other. Roach's comedy background is pretty spotty, as those two credits above indicate, but he also directed the 2008 TV movie Recount, about the Bush v. Gore recount in the 2000 Presidential election, to rave reviews. Clearly the guy has a skill with political comedy that may not translate in stories about wacky dinner parties.
It's hard to really complain about anything here, especially if there's a good script involved (someone please track down at least one of the In the Loop writers to give it a pass-- there are four to choose from!) It's hard to buy Galifianakis and his current comedic persona as a believable political candidate, but then again there's still Sarah Palin out there, so anything is really possible.
