Will Smith is about to take on a life of crime for the government. He’s signed up to star in a big screen version of the little known late-sixties television show It Takes A Thief, according to Variety.
The original series starred Robert Wagner as a charming professional thief blackmailed by the CIA into being their on staff stuff stealer. From 1968-1970 Wagner snuck around on television screens engaging in covert larceny for the good of his country. Smith will step right into Wagner’s role, bringing to the table all his usual charm and skill with a one liner.
Will’s not just starring though, he’s producing too, along with his partner at Overbrook Entertainment James Lassiter. Nobody just acts anymore, they’ve all got their own production studios and fancy corporate nameplates to attach to whatever project they work on. Despite Will’s company’s involvement, the movie is actually being funded by Universal Pictures and being written by the guys who scripted 2005’s Four Brothers: David Elliot and Paul Lovett.
It’s not a terrible movie concept, it’s just a little tiring to hear that Will Smith is involved in it. It’s another predictable move for him, the role’s description practically screams his name. Will stretched himself once, and actually did some acting in a movie called Ali. The movie was panned, but Will Smith was nothing short of brilliant in it. Since then though, it’s almost as if Ali’s bad reviews left him burned. He’s stuck to the same, charming rogue formula ever since. I guess it works. He continues to be disgustingly rich.
