It’s been a few weeks since we’ve heard anything further about Marvel’s proposed movie version of Captain America, but it looks like today the casting rumors are starting anew. MTV talked to actor Derek Luke, who has absolutely nothing to do with Captain America, but who still claims to know who Marvel has cast to play the character.
According to Luke, they’ve offered the part to Will Smith. Granted, in the comics Captain America is about the whitest white guy ever to wear spandex, but it wouldn’t be the first time a Marvel character has been cast colorblind. Sam Jackson played Nick Fury in the closing credits of Iron Man this summer, and even further back Michael Clarke Duncan played Kingpin in Daredevil. Will Smith’s public persona is Mr. All American, why not give him a promotion to Captain America? For now, it’s just another one of those pesky rumors, at least until someone who’s actually involved in the film says something to support it. UPDATE! As predicted, the rumor has been debunked.
