Will Smith Produces The Long Run
Stephen Belber’s career as a writer has been punctuated by moral lessons, from his contributions to The Laramie Project to a few episodes of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. His next script looks to be along the same lines, and it’s getting a little help from the Fresh Prince of Bel Air to come to screens.
Hollywood Reporter announced that Belber’s next script, The Long Run has been picked up by Columbia Pictures and will be produced by Will Smith’s Overbrook production company, although Smith is not currently planned to be involved beyond producing.
The script is about a journalist who helps clear a death row inmate of murder charges for a crime he didn’t commit. The inmate goes on to run for public office with the journalist becoming a member of his campaign. The former-reporter faces a crisis of conscience when he discovers that the former-inmate just might be guilty of murder after all.
It’s a shame Smith isn’t planning on being more involved than producing. This movie sounds like it could be a really good vehicle for him. It sounds like a pretty good story and I can see a trailer in my mind just reading the brief summary of the story, so it’s no surprise to hear Columbia picked this up as a spec script.
