Will Smith Terrorizes Scottish Children If you’ve ever been to Times Square and thought the ads there were obnoxious, then don’t head over to Glasgow. A controversy recently broke out there over a trailer for I Am Legend, shown in the city’s central George Park. Apparently the trailer included footage of Will Smith witnessing a deer being mauled by a mountain lion, merely feet—feet!—away from groups of children.

We like to think of the Scots as being more relaxed than we are, but some adults there worked themselves into a big American-style hissy fit over it. My favorite quote in this article from Glasgow’s Evening Times is from an unidentified passerby: "I just happened to look up and got the fright of my life. Will Smith was watching this deer graze and then suddenly out of nowhere comes this lion. You think you're watching an almost pastoral scene with this cuddly little deer, then this thing zooms across the screen and suddenly the deer gets devoured in one gulp.”

I guess I can’t blame the guy too much for not paying attention to too many ads or being acutely aware of I Am Legend’s existence—that’s what geeks like me are for—but come on. When has Will Smith ever been involved in a pastoral scene with a cuddly little deer? Will Smith exists on this planet for one purpose, and that purpose is to entertain us. Unless it’s an animated deer with a dead mother, deer are not entertaining on their own.

A commenter on the newspaper article pretty much sums up my feelings on this: “Is this *really* the main story in Glasgow today?” Probably not, but at least it’s made us Americans feel better about the useless crap we get worked up over; at least we’re in good company.
