You want vampires? Daybreakers has vampires. Instead of presenting vampires as the scourge of the Earth or some ghastly lot to be defeated, Daybreakers is putting vampires front and center. The movie takes place ten years from now; ten years after a plague transforms some humans into vampiric beings, dependent upon human blood for survival.
What’s interesting is the movie appears to be more about a civil war between vampires. In the movie, the human race is nearing extinction, so vampires are getting desperate for their own survival. The story follows a group of rebel vampires who are trying to save the last vestiges of humanity… presumably to farm them, I’m guessing?
Ethan Hawke and Sam Neil had already been announced by Lions Gate as being a part of the production, but today StarPulse News Willem Dafoe has joined the cast and will play opposite Hawke. I’ll go out on a limb and suggest Ethan probably leads the rebels while Dafoe is part of the vampire establishment.
According to their story, Hawke compares the movie to what’s going on now with resources, foreign policy, etc. He also says it’s some pretty messed up shit, with a very dark story where everyone is sucking each other’s blood.
Of course, Dafoe is no stranger to vampire stories. He played a “real vampire” in the alternate history movie, Shadow of the Vampire.
