With A Release Actually Happening, I Love You Phillip Morris Gets A NSFW Trailer
There have been a number of trailers for I Love You Phillip Morris over the years, mostly from foreign distributors and yanked off the Internet by now, none of them promoting what materialized into an actual release for the film. But now that the movie is finally-- finally!-- hitting theaters in December thanks to new distributor Roadside Attractions, there's a trailer online intended for us Americans, who will be seeing the film a solid year after it premiered in Europe.
The trailer pokes fun at the Christmas-timed release and gets in a pretty gross "Guess who's coming?" joke right from the outset-- yes, this sucker is pretty NSFW, though the explicit gay sex is toned down after that first joke. In the film Jim Carrey plays a man who realizes he's gay, goes on a crime spree to fund his lavish gay lifestyle, falls in love with a fellow inmate (Phillip Morris) and then proceeds to break out of jail and try to free his partner. The film got good reviews when it premiered at Sundance a million years ago (OK, in 2009), and co-directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa were recently nominated for Gotham Awards for their work on the film. The trailer does a nice job of showing off the comedy without making it seem overly zany or stupid, and somehow I'm still looking forward to this movie, even despite the false starts on its way to release.
Check out the trailer below. I Love You Phillip Morris opens in limited release on December 3 and will expand elsewhere throughout December.
