There’s a lot to love about comic book conventions, from the informative and entertaining panels and presentations to the presentation floors filled with all kinds of awesome toys and artifacts, but perhaps the greatest aspect of all is the fan appreciation expressed through cosplay. Die hards spend months waiting for the next con to roll around and working on heavily detailed costumes based on the looks of their favorite characters. Over the last few years I’ve had the chance to visit a number of these conventions and see a lot of amazing outfits, but the crop at this year’s Wonder Con may be some of the best I’ve seen.

Today marked the first day of the annual comic book convention held in Anaheim, CA, and I drove down early in the morning to take as many photos of costumed aficionados as my camera could contain. Over the course of the hours spent walking in front of and around the convention center I got to see an amazing number of clever get-ups from all walks of fandom, from those celebrating the characters of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to gender-bending adaptations of Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman’s version of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson.

I shot 170 photographs during the day, and you can see them all in the gallery below. Check them out, tell us who your favorites are in the comments section, and stay tuned for more of our Wonder Con 2014 coverage on Saturday!
