John Singleton has been out talking about the A-Team movie he’s supposed to be directing. Collider managed to pin him down for an interview, and while Singleton didn’t make my dreams come true by using this as an opportunity to tell Ice Cube to wake the fuck up and realize he’s too fat to play Mr. T, he did drop a few encouraging tidbits about what he’s planning for everyone’s favorite team of ex-military, 80s crusaders.
The big news from Singleton is that he wants Woody Harrelson to play Murdock. Come on, you remember Murdock. He’s not the handsome one, he doesn’t chomp cigars, and he’s not wearing a Mohawk, so of course he must be the crazy one. Howling Mad Murdock was played in the original series by Dwight Schultz. And, just for the record, if they’re going to make an A-Team movie it’s Schultz who should play him again. “Howling Mad” wasn’t just the character’s cute nickname… he really was. I have a hard time imagining anyone else pulling that off, though I suppose if you have to pick some sort of “name” to play the character I suppose Woody has as good a shot at doing right by Murdock as anyone. There are certainly some physical similarities.
The really good news to come out of Singleton’s interview is confirmation that he’s not doing the A-Team movie as one of those awful, insulting, 80s parodies in the mold of Starsky & Hutch. In early incarnations of the project, there were rumors that they were trying to turn the thing into a comedy. But Collider says Singleton has assured them he’s making something more like an 80s action movie, in the vein of Lethal Weapon but with less humor. Like Lethal Weapon, there may even be plans for multiple movies, since Singleton says all the actors involved will have sequels grandfathered in to their contracts.
