The Official Setting
Seeing as how X-Men: Days of Future Past took place in the 1970s, it long has been discussed that X-Men: Apocalypse would pick up the action in the 1980s. This meant that Bryan Singer and Simon Kinberg could (and would) pick up younger versions of characters like Cyclops and Storm, who we saw later on the timeline portrayed by older actors. More on that casting in a moment. But now, Kinberg confirmed that the movie specifically will be set in 1983, or 10 years after the events of DOFP. Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult will be continuing their roles, though they will also be playing characters 21 years older than when we first met them in First Class. Rose Byrne recently joked about the 1980s wardrobe for her character, Moira MacTaggert. We even got hints about the involvement of Morlocks! Also, this is right around the time that Jean Grey, Cyclops and Storm are coming to Xavier's school. Who did they cast in those roles?
