Putting Michel Gondry behind the camera of anything will get my blood pumping, but somehow this new trailer for his upcoming comic adaptation Green Hornet just seems dead flat. There are a few one liners that will garner a smirk and some flashy ‘splosions, but the short clip just does nothing for me, even though I love action comedies as a genre.

Maybe it’s that the trailer lacks everything there is to love about a Michel Gondry film--the whimsical, the fun, the visual pop. Maybe it’s because we’re so used to seeing Seth Rogen play the same character that it no longer seems perfected and just feels overdone. Or maybe it’s a fear that the genius actor Christoph Waltz seems to be reduced to a one-note, stereotypical baddie with a bad Russian name (Chudnofsky). Whatever the case may be, it all adds up to something that you won’t care about enough to send to your friends, and that’s all that matters when it comes to marketing these days.
