This Year's Oscar Poster Wants You To Focus On The Hits Of The Past
The annual Academy Awards don't need a poster to put up in movie theater lobbies or slap all over billboards, but the Oscars need to be promoted just like any good movie, and this year's new poster is promoting the awards by highlighting some of the classic winners of the past. Unveiled today, the new poster is dominated by the iconic gold statue, but also features images from some memorable Best Picture winners from all of the eight decades in which the awards have been handed out. Keep an eye out for Marlon Brandon, Russell Crowe, Humphrey Bogart and more when you check out the poster below.
![]() The best marketing tactic for the Oscars has always been to highlight the grander moments of the past, especially if you think you're coming in on a year when nobody will have seen the nominated films-- sorry, Hurt Locker. As this year shakes out it looks like once again the biggest hits won't be the most nominated, with The Artist, Hugo, The Descendants and Moneyball leading the pack of nominees. Of course there's still The Help, which will likely be a Best Picture nominee, but it's still a hit from the long-gone days of summer. So instead of getting you to watch for the new films, the Oscars want you to remember the glory days of The Godfather, Casablanca, Giant, Gladiator, The Sound of Music, It Happened One Night, Forrest Gump and, uh, Driving Miss Daisy, which I guess is the best they could come up with from the fairly dismal 80s. No, Don Corleone won't be winning an Oscar this year-- but it's good to remember back when he did. |
