The success of the live-action Alvin and the Chipmunk movies has emboldened Hollywood into funding some other really weird ideas. If a movie about singing, rockstar Chipmunks can work, then why not one about a talking bear? Yogi Bear.
HR says Warner Bros. Pictures has hired visual effects supervisor Eric Brevig to direct a movie based on the classic Hanna-Barbera Yogi Bear cartoons. They’re planning to do something in the mold of Alvin which probably means a CGI bear plopped down in the human world. Throw all the technology you want at these films, but it’s basically Pete’s Dragon all over again. Except this time it’s in 3D, which should really throw the stoner crowd for a loop. Whoa dude! I don’t really want to see Yogi Bear wandering around in the real world. If we’re going to do these movies, then let’s go back to the days of the live action Flinstones movie. Yeah it was cheesy, but at least they tried to recreate the entire Flinstones world on screen. I wouldn’t mind seeing the cartoon world of Yogi recreated using real people and maybe a guy in a convincing bear suit. That’s something. I have no interest in seeing a movie about a CGI talking bear in a modern, realistic camp ground making jokes about the size of his poop, even if the Yogi Bear name is slapped on it.
