You Know Kevin G's Mean Girls Rap? You Can Thank Amy Poehler For It

Three hysterical things happen during the talent show in Mean Girls. The first is a brilliant, overly emotional rendition of Christina Aguilera’s "Beautiful" by Damian. The second is, of course, the "Jingle Bell Rock" fiasco when the music starts skipping during the Plastics’ performance, and the third is Kevin G’s sexually explicit original rap that gets cut off early. Of the three, Kevin G’s rap probably gets talked about the least among Mean Girls fans, which is a shame, but it turns out that one actually has the most fascinating backstory.

Tina Fey may have been the Weekend Update anchorman who wrote Mean Girls, but it was apparently her co-star Amy Poehler who made a significant contribution to Kevin G’s sweet moves and vocal stylings. Here’s what director Marc Webb had to say about it during an interview with Vulture, in which he was asked how Fey came up with the song…

"She'll actually give credit to Amy for this, because Amy is more of the rap person. Amy definitely coached him on how to do the rap, and she actually gave him some of the moves and choreography for it."

Because I know you’re itching for it, here’s the video embed of the hysterical piece of music…

How is it possible that Poehler continues to get cooler? I’ll be honest, I was pretty down when she split with Will Arnett, but how could you possibly stay mad at that woman? She’s a comedy genius with a flair for over the top antics that strike exactly the right note. I mean, in retrospect, doesn’t that rap sound exactly like the one an Indian, wannabe rapper, math prodigy would write? Yes. Yes it does.

There are a lot of movies that claim to have a cult following, but apart from Rocky Horror, Clue and a few others, an overwhelming majority only wish they had fans as weirdly obsessed as Mean Girls’. Some people can quote that entire movie by heart. I know because I’m one of them, and I somehow like the film less than about four or five of my friends.
