Apparently Zac Efron is sick of singing and dancing for his supper. The Wrap is reporting that the High School Musical heartthrob has dropped out of Paramount's planned remake of Footloose, a movie that basically seemed to exist because he was willing to star in it. The Wrap heard the news from a source, but hasn't gotten any confirmation from the Paramount side of thing.
Efron's line to the studio was that he doesn't want to do another musical at this point in his career. On one hand, sure-- his only two major movie roles were both musicals, High School Musical 3 and Hairspray, and maybe he wants to diversify. On the other hand, he already has 17 Again coming up really soon, and he's very much on the verge of becoming an icon for both adults and tweens. Wouldn't he want to stick with what he does best?
I'd guess that Efron's departure means the project is dead, since I can't imagine anyone else with the starpower to keep a movie like this running (unless Robert Pattinson has singing and dancing skills we don't know about). So children of the 80s, your Footloose memories will remain intact. But Efron fans may have to be singing to themselves from now on.
