You’ve all probably heard by now the rumors that Zack Snyder may have drastically changed the original ending of Watchmen in the comic for his adaptation into a movie. There’s been some speculation that the test screening reports claiming the comic’s giant squid ending has been removed were red herrings, but speaking to Dark Horizons, Snyder all but confesses his Watchmen heresy.
When asked the big squid question Snyder at first dodged the question, with this: “The fans, god love 'em, they're all up in arms about the squid. What they should be up in arms about are things like shooting the pregnant woman, 'God is real and he's American', whether THAT's in the movie. That's my point of view, maybe I'm crazy." Not sure where he’s going with that. He’s saying we should be worried more about a single line of dialogue (granted, gutsy, great dialogue) than we should be about the entire ending of the movie? Sorry Snyder, that doesn’t jive.
Zack eventually got the point and all but confessed he’s dropped the giant squid. He says, “the squid was not in the movie when I got the script, the squid was never in any draft that I saw. My point is only that there was this elegant solution to the squid problem that I kind of embraced. I'm a fan of the thing as much as anyone, I was saying what are we going to do about this before I even read the script.” He wouldn’t however confirm that this “solution” was the nuclear holocaust ending rumored. He does hint at it though saying, “I won't say exactly but... Dr. Manhattan has a certain energy signature, it's clearly his thing...so you know.”
For more Watchmen talk from Snyder, grab your pitchforks and torches, and head over to Dark Horizons where you can read the rest.
