You may remember that we were thoroughly horrified to hear that captain of the motion-capture army Robert Zemeckis was planning a remake of Yellow Submarine, filmed by attaching ping-pong balls to actors' faces and transforming them into creepy, almost-lifelike animated versions of The Beatles.
And while I'd still much rather Zemeckis take on an original story, I'm a little more intrigued about the project after watching Gabe Sunday's audition tape for the film. A source tells us that Sunday is "in the final running" to be the film's John Lennon, and watching the tape below it's not hard to see why-- Sunday captures Lennon's voice and mannerisms both when singing and simply lounging around a house. It's not your typical audition tape, but the gambit really pays off, proving that Sunday has it in him to actually inhabit, not just imitate, the unmistakable figure that Lennon is.
Zemeckis is apparently watching Sunday's tape this as we speak, so it's likely that we'll hear official casting for Lennon, and maybe the other three, very soon. Another point of interest is that Sunday's YouTube page claims the audition is for "Untitled Fab Four Project," whereas the project was announced as simply Yellow Submarine. Does that mean Zemeckis is considering incorporating other elements of the Beatles catalog and story? Sounds like a much better idea to me-- anyone who has seen the opening animation of the Beatles Rock Band knows how much fun there is to be had with the entire Beatles history. No matter what's happening, it looks like we'll be learning more details about the movie soon enough. Check out Sunday's audition tape below, and stay tuned to see if he's who we'll be seeing, in animated form, as John Lennon.
