American Hustle Will Con Its Way Onto Blu-ray In March
With ten Oscar nominations and plenty of support from members of the Academy, itís very possible March 2 will prove to be a wonderful evening for American Hustle. There are few joys like celebrating a Best Picture victory, or at least so Iíve been told, but regardless of whether the film wins or not, the larger month should be a great one because thatís when the film is finally going to be available for purchase. Itíll officially hit Blu-ray, DVD and Digital on March 18 from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.
The lengthy, heavily soundtracked and beautifully dialogued film stars Amy Adams and Christian Bale as two con artists who get in way over the heads with the FBI in an effort to keep themselves out of jail. With the help of Bradley Cooper, the two engineer a scheme to catch elected officials accepting bribes. Was the plan basically entrapment? Was it needed to root out the easily corruptible? Historians have plenty of different takes on ABSCAM, and while director David O Russellís film is the least factual, it is far and away the most interesting. It netted Academy Award nominations in all four major acting categories, a feat duplicated by Russellís last movie Silver Linings Playbook.
Whether it really was the Best Picture or not, the film is unquestionably a careful and extremely interesting film that spins a pretty fascinating yarn. Itíll play very well with those who didnít get a chance to catch it in theaters, and in theory, it should play just as well to those who want to take a look at it for a second time. Thatís the thing about con movies. Thereís almost always a handful of things that can only be discovered the second time around. You can remind yourself of the brilliance of the trailer belowÖ
At 129 minutes, American Hustle, the film, certainly isnít hurting for lack of content, and yet, it somehow still apparently had some material good enough to be seen but not quite good enough to make the larger film. Both the DVD and the Blu-ray will come with both deleted and extended scenes, as well as a featurette that goes into how the film was made. We donít have run-times yet on any of the special features materials, but with a movie this good, it isnít typically the bells and whistles that convince buyers to open their wallets.
