For a while it looked like the film adaptation of Adam Rapp’s dark play Red Light Winter was in trouble, as both Mark Ruffalo and Billy Crudup dropped out of the production, but now it seems that the movie has found new life. Ben Foster has signed on for one of the lead roles, joining the previously cast Kirsten Dunst and Katherine Waterston.

According to Variety, the story follows a pair of friends who travel from New York to Amsterdam looking for a good time, but end up in a love triangle with a prostitute that threatens their friendship. Foster will be taking over the role that Ruffalo was set to play, a character described as “an anxious emerging writer,” while Dunst is still attached to play the working girl. Rapp, who is serving as writer and director on the project, is still looking for Crudup’s replacement. Scott Rudin, Jay Van Hoy and Lars Knudsen are set to produce the movie, and they are currently aiming to start production by this December or January of next year.

Foster, who starred in Baltasar Kormákur’s Contraband alongside Mark Wahlberg earlier this year, doesn’t have any more movies coming out this year, but will have at least two titles set for 2013. He recently wrapped production on both Kill Your Darlings - in which he plays famed writer William Burroughs – and David Lowery’s Texas outlaw drama Ain’t Them Bodies Saints with Rooney Mara and Casey Affleck. Neither of those projects have release dates yet.
