Beyonce managed to steal the spotlight at MTV's Video Music Awards by simply placing her hands on her stomach. Clad in a drippy red gown and beaming, the singer confirmed that she is pregnant with her first child after more than three years of marriage to Jay-Z. She then went on to perform her new song "Love on Top" and essentially look like the most powerful woman in the world while flaunting her baby bump. But as happens for so many actresses in the middle of hot careers, motherhood is going to put a slight pause in her plans for worldwide domination.

According to Deadline Clint Eastwood was hoping to get started this spring on his take on A Star is Born, the classic Hollywood story of a rising starlet falling in love with a decrepit older star on his way down. Beyonce has been attached to the project for years, even longer than Eastwood has, and has waited patiently as they tried to find an actor who could hold his own opposite her. And even though it will slow down production, Eastwood and the producers are more than willing to wait for Beyonce to give birth and enjoy motherhood for a while. The Deadline story repeats a few of the rumors about potential leading men for the film, like Christian Bale and Will Smith, but it's clear that no one is confirmed yet.

Watching Beyonce perform tonight was a powerful reminder of what a charismatic and impressive stage presence she can be, and even though her acting chops aren't quite confirmed-- she was fine in Dreamgirls, but nothing eye-opening-- I can't think of many other musicians I'd rather see take on the Star is Born role famously played by both Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand. Hopefully she won't just be up for the challenge, but will make it worth the wait.
