There were a lot of book adaptations that hit theaters towards the end of the year. While big budget films like The Hunger Games and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug made a big splash at the box office, lower budget options like The Book Thief still managed to touch hearts. If you are a fan of the tale based on the popular Young Adult novel by Markus Zusak or simply would like to give it a shot, you can catch The Book Thief when it hits Blu-ray and DVD on March 11. Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment also plans to make an early digital release of the film available, with those copies hitting the market on February 25.

Set in Nazi Germany during World War II, the story follows Liesel (Sophie Nelisse), an orphaned young lady who is interested in reading. When Nazi factions begin burning books in her hometown, she becomes the titular thief, stealing and borrowing any book she can get her hands on. In an intricate subplot, her guardians Hans (Geoffrey Rush) and Rosa (Emily Watson) are hiding a Jewish man named Max (Ben Schnetzer), which leads to plenty of twists and turns in the plot, creating a dramatic adventure with lively protagonists. If you want to get a feel for the tone of the film, you can check out the trailer, below.

The flick hasnít earned a ton of buzz, although it did nab a Golden Globes nomination for best original score, which was put together by the prolific John Williams. Additionally, true to its low budget, The Book Thief doesnít look as if it will contain a plethora of extras. The barebones set should present fans with some interesting deleted scenes, as well as the basic making-of featurette that has become popular with sets. With these ideas in mind, it looks like The Book Thiefís Blu-ray release is one die hard fans of the flick should pick up. For anyone just casually hoping to get into the movie, the early Digital release or maybe even an On Demand rental might be nice. You can check out the full list of bonus features, below, or pre-order The Book Thief over at Amazon. For good measure, if youíve been wanting to check out the book the film is based on, you can nab a copy of that, as well.
