Yesterday brought good news for fans of Battlestar Galactica. In the report that said Bryan Singer's plans to remake Excalibur were axed, it was said that Singer would be picking up the classic sci-fi project instead, having been officially attached to the project since 2009. But with Singer currently working on Jack The Giant Killer, nobody expected the movie to start coming together immediately. It looks like that was a false assumption.

According to Deadline, the project is already moving forward and writer John Orloff has been hired to write the script. Emmy nominated for his work on Band of Brothers, Orloff's feature work includes scripts for Zack Snyder's Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole and Roland Emmerich's Anonymous, which will be released next week. Rather than being based on the hit Sci-Fi show by Ronald Moore that ran from 2004 to 2009, the movie will be more closely linked to the Glen Larson series from the late 1970s. Orloff is apparently a huge fan of the franchise from when he was a kid, going as far as to build his own models of the series' ship. "I love BSG, and I would pass on the job rather than frak it up," Orloff said. The original series was about a ship of human refugees on a warship looking for planet Earth and starred Richard Hatch, Dirk Benedict, Lorne Greene and Herbert Jefferson Jr.

Orloff doesn't exactly have a ton of experience writing in the sci-fi genre, but his passion is definitely clear. As I mentioned before, Singer is still hard at work on Jack the Giant Killer, so there still may be a good amount of time before Battlestar Galactica comes to the big screen. While we wait, what do you think of Orloff's hiring?
