Colin Firth, who was famous for a long time as the stammering dreamboat of Bridget Jones's Diary or Love, Actually, has been on a serious streak lately, starting with an Oscar-nominated turn in the period drama A Serious Man, leading into the Oscar-winning role in The King's Speech, then hopping into the massive ensemble of the spy thriller Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. But Firth is an excellent comic actor too, and he's finally back to show off his silly side in Gambit, a caper comedy with a script written by none other than Joel and Ethan Coen.

For your first look at Gambit, in which Firth co-stars with Cameron Diaz and Alan Rickman, take a look at the trailer below:

That suitcase full of British pounds feel almost like a joke at the Coen Brothers themselves, whose films frequently revolve around a bunch of characters chasing a box full of cash they don't deserve. Firth's character here doesn't seem like quite the scumbags that populate many Coen Brothers movies, but he's in for a world of trouble anyway-- as we all know from the Harry Potter movies, you just don't tangle with Alan Rickman unless you're ready to face the consequences.

Cameron Diaz's cowgirl accent seems a little questionable, but she's another talented comic actress who doesn't seem to show her stuff often enough, and she and Firth could make for an appealing pair. Gambit is a loose remake of a 1966 caper starring Shirley MacLaine and Michael Caine, and it's directed by Michael Hoffman, who previously made the historical comedy The Last Station, which earned Oscar nominations for Helen Mirren and Christopher Plummer. This looks like a much lighter affair, but that's probably a good thing.

Gambit doesn't have a set release in the United States yet, but sometime early next year seems pretty likely.
