While I didn't hate Green Lantern nearly as much as everyone else seemed to (that doesn't mean I ignored its many, many flaws), there was one thing that really stuck out to me as really terrible: the film's score. While I'm satisfied with movie music as long as it isn't disruptive, the Green Lantern score was completely out of place and failed to sync with the film's tone. It was so distracting, in fact, that I made a point of finding out who the composer was during the end credits and was amazed to see that James Newton Howard, an 8 time Oscar nominee - was the man behind the music. Now all I have to say is that I hope he does a better job with The Hunger Games.

According to Variety, Howard has been brought in to work on the score for the upcoming Suzanne Collins adaptation. This may surprise fans who have been following the film's progress from the beginning, as it was announced over the summer that Danny Elfman was going to compose the score along with T. Bone Burnett. Unfortunately, scheduling conflicts have screwed up the timing and Elfman will no longer be able to do the music, leaving Lionsgate to hire Howard. It should be noted that Burnett will stay on and work with the new composer. The news doesn't come as too much of a surprise, as Elfman's upcoming schedule also includes Tim Burton's Dark Shadows and Barry Sonnenfeld's Men in Black III, both of which, like The Hunger Games, are scheduled to be released in the first half of 2012.

For those concerned that this may have a negative impact on Gary Ross' new movie, there's no need to fear. While his Green Lantern score may not have been top notch, he was also responsible for the excellent scores in movies like Michael Clayton, Batman Begins and Collateral.
