David O. Russell and Eli Roth are two filmmakers that you really rarely hear about in the same breath. After all, the former is a three-time Oscar nominee with credits like Silver Linings Playbook and The Fighter, while the latter has made his name with gorific horror titles like Cabin Fever and Hostel. You wouldn't even necessarily think that they would be hanging around in the same circles, but now we not only have word that Russell and Roth know each other personally, but also that they may soon team up on a project together.

With American Hustle set to hit theaters next month and expected to be a big part of Awards season over the next few months, Russell recently participated in The Hollywood Reporter's director roundtable (via The Playlist) with Steve McQueen, Paul Greengrass, Ben Stiller, Alfonso Cuaron and Lee Daniel, and during the 50-minute long conversation the Three Kings filmmaker revealed that between making I Heart Huckabees and The Fighter he actually wrote a script for a horror film that Roth is thinking about directing. ""I wrote a couple of things that someone might make," Russell told the table. "Eli Roth may actually do one, I wrote a horror a few years ago."

So what exactly is the film about? Russell is keeping quiet for now, but he did explain how the script came into existence. "I had to write to support myself," The filmmaker said. "So I wrote a horror for producer Colleen Camp - a horror film that I thought was interesting. And Eli thinks its interesting, I think he's going to make it more interesting. It's emotional, it's also... we'll see. It's also...I don't wanna say anything more, I'll let Eli talk about it."

You can watch the full director roundtable in the video player below:

Before this year Roth hadn't directed a feature of his own since 2007's Hostel: Part II, but that story changed at this year's Toronto International Film Festival, which premiered Roth newest film The Green Inferno. Based on an original script co-written by the director, the movie follows a group of New York City activists who travel down to the Amazon in hope of saving an endangered tribe. This plan goes horribly wrong, however, when their plane crashes and the tribe they were trying to protect takes them hostage.

It's hard to imagine what exactly a collaboration between Russell and Roth would look like, but I would honestly be interested in taking a look at it. Russell has been on an incredible hot streak of late, and it would be fascinating to see what his version of a horror story would be like. In the meantime, fans of the director will only have to wait a short time for his next work, as American Hustle arrives in theaters on December 18th.
