GK Films Buys The Rights To Tomb Raider, Reboot Coming In 2013

I feel like we hear about it every single year. Despite the fact that both Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life were absolutely terrible, at least once every twelve months bring news of a reboot for the videogame franchise. In that time, we've heard time and time again about casting and the production - the most recent one coming just last month - but no progress has ever actually been made. Perhaps the 83rd time is the charm.

Deadline has received a press release announcing that GK Films has acquired the rights to make a new feature film version of the long running video game franchise. Produced by Graham King and Tim Headington, the plan is to have a new film in theaters by 2013. First developed back in the mid-1990s, the series became famous largely because of its central protagonist, Lara Croft, a short-short-and-tube-top wearing, busty, gun toting archeologist. The a new game in the franchise, simply titled Tomb Raider, will be released in December and largely focuses on Croft's origin story.

I truly don't understand why studios keep trying to make video game movies. Not a single one has ever been critically successful and most of them are just flat-out awful. I'm not going to go into a whole thing about transferring from an interactive medium to a passive one is a mistake, but I will say that you probably shouldn't look forward to the day that King and Headington go up to receive the Best Picture Oscar for this project.
