Godzilla Will Face Other Monsters In The New Reboot

The rumors around a new Godzilla movie have been swirling for years, but it wasn't until recently that they began to look realistic. Starting in August of last year, talk began that Legendary Pictures was rebooting the franchise after Roland Emmerich's disastrous take on the character back in 1998. The rumor was then confirmed this past March and then concept art for the creature appeared back in July. To say that development of the project has been moving at a snail's pace would be an understatement, but perhaps it's a good sign that they're taking their time with it. But just because we haven't been seeing every little detail about the project doesn't mean that it's not actually being developed.

YouTube user Zennie 62 (via Bleeding Cool) caught up with producer Brian Rogers at this week’s 3D Summit and dropped some pretty details about the in-development film, including:

• 2012 remains a target release for the film, but nothing is official yet.
• The project is being developed with IMAX 3D in mind.
• The film will be a complete reboot that will pay homage to the original character.
• No more "iguana-like character laying eggs."
• As a reboot, it will be brought into the 21st century.
• It will take notes from Batman Begins: utilizing traditional elements while bringing in new ones to make them stronger.
• This Godzilla head has no connection to the new film.
• There will be another "monster or monsters that Godzilla will fight," as not having them goes against the "spirit of the character."
• Godzilla will be a CGI character in a live-action film.

It sounds as though the people behind the project actually have some connection to and affinity towards the original material, which will only help in the long run. The truth of the matter, however, is that it would be incredibly hard to screw it up any more than Emmerich did.
