Gravity Predicted To Win The Box Office For The Third Time, Carrie To Open Strong
October is typically a month when the horror genre rules the box office, but it doesn't appear that rule is going to hold up this weekend, as once again estimates say that a sci-fi thriller will be taking the number one spot. Movie ticket sales site Fandango has sent out its box office predictions for the upcoming weekend and while the newly released Carrie remake looks like it will have a strong showing, it doesn't look like it will be able to take down the reigning champion, Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity.
Should estimates prove to be accurate, this will be the third weekend that Gravity has owned the box office, and the numbers continue to soar. According to the site's chief correspondent, Dave Karger, the film "is selling more tickets on its third weekend than most movies sell on their first weekend.” There is no guess as to how much money Cuaron's film is expected to make Friday through Sunday, but Fandango says that the film remains on top of their "Fanticipation" charts with a score of 84 out of 100.
Surprisingly, Carrie's scores are almost as strong. While trailers have made Kimberly Pierce's adaptation of the classic Stephen King novel basically look like a shot-for-shot remake of Brian De Palma's movie from 1976, users on Fandango have given the movie a 79/100 score and it's predicted that the film will come in a close second place to the current Oscar frontrunner.
While Carrie will probably be found in theaters everywhere nationwide, also opening this weekend in limited release will be Steve McQueen's 12 Years A Slave. While the film isn't expected to place very high on the box office charts, Fandango says that the Award Winning movie will very likely have the highest per screen average of any movie coming out tomorrow. Given the film's incredible buzz, it's not a big surprise that people are looking to hunt the movie down.
