Guillermo Del Toro-Produced Mama Conjures A Terrifying Trailer
It has been far too long since Guillermo del Toro last directed a film (his most recent was 2008’s Hellboy II: The Golden Army). And since it will be another year until we get to see Pacific Rim, we have to settle on films del Toro “presents,” the next of which will be the ghost thriller Mama, due in theaters early next year. Instead of describing it, we’re happy to post the first official trailer, provided by Universal. It’s chilling. See for yourself:
Normally a January release would give me pause. Very few good movies come out in the first month of the year, as studios avoid the post-New Year’s funk that seems to keep people out of movie theaters. But del Toro’s name could help lure people to Mama, and it looks like Andres Muschietti has directed a moody, terrifying spirit story.
What most surprises me in the clip are the performances by the young girls. Victoria (Megan Charpentier) and Lilly (Isabelle Nelisse) are orphaned sisters discovered in the woods and released into the care of a loving couple. The only problem is that their mother, who seems to be deceased, isn’t ready to let her daughters go.
Oh, I take it back. The other big surprise is that the brunette in the movie is Jessica Chastain, who had a fantastic 2011 and could get 2013 off on a solid footing if Mama is anything to write home about. We’ll find out when the ghost thriller opens on January 18. To learn more about it, head over to our Blend Film Database
