A third Hangover is coming, people, whether you want it or not. The minute last summer’s sequel crossed the $250 million mark (topping out at $581 million worldwide), that fact became inevitable. So the question becomes, “Where will the wolf pack wake up next?”

Initial rumors that surfaced shortly after Todd Phillips’ second Hangover suggested that the third movie could involve Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Justin Bartha breaking Zach Galifianakis’ character out of a mental institute. And that might still be the case. But Cooper, appearing on BBC One’s The Graham Norton Show to plug the Blu-ray release of Part II, tipped his hat to a possible location … and maybe some direction.

“I think that we adhered to the formula in the second one, for those who’ve seen it, and the third one, I think, which would close the whole trilogy,” Cooper told the talk show host. “I think it’ll take place in Los Angeles and maybe not adhere to the structure. It might be different.”

Cooper has been promising that since the Part II press circuit, claiming that since we’re now intimately familiar with Stu, Alan and Phil, the audience doesn’t need the device of “one wild night” to get them into the theater. Now you’ll just show up to see what happens to them next. And I agree with that, wholeheartedly. It’s time to cut these guys loose from their comfortable formula. Explore the idea of the psychiatric ward concept. Go all out for the trilogy capper, Mr. Phillips, and audiences will reward your courage.
