Hero Blend #2: The Uncanny, Fantastic Future Of The Fox Marvel Universe

The comic book movie world is split into many factions, with Warner Bros. holding all the rights to DC characters, Sony building their own little universe with Spider-Man, and Marvel Studios and Disney finding new ways to bring The Avengers together every couple of years. But some of the most interesting developments in the genre right now are happening over at 20th Century Fox. The studio has spent the last few years developing new ideas and directions for both their X-Men and Fantastic Four franchises – and the fuse on those plans seems all but ready to be to lit.

The Fantastic Four reboot has been a project that Fox has been tooling with for years now, Chronicle director Josh Trank attached to helm the film working from a script written by Simon Kinberg, but this past week has gotten us closer than we’ve ever been to seeing the new cast put together. It was reported in the trades that all this week actors would be going into the studio to try out for the coveted roles of Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch and The Thing. Many talented young actors were said to be going out for the parts, including Michael B. Jordan, Miles Teller, Richard Madden, Kit Harrington, Saoirse Ronan, Kate Mara and even Josh Gad – but what does that tell us about the direction the reboot is taking?

Unlike The Fantastic Four, the X-Men series has been going strong for more than a decade now, and later this year we will see the release of the seventh film in the franchise: X-Men: Days of Future Past. Director Bryan Singer hasn’t been shy at all about sharing all the various ins and outs of the moviemaking process, Tweeting a new picture from the set just about every day the film was in production last year, but this week saw the upcoming blockbuster get its biggest reveal yet. Empire Magazine debuted a collection of 25 magazine covers, all together showing off the film’s absolutely massive ensemble of mutant characters. But what do the photos tell us about what to expect in Days of Future Past?

All of this is up for discussion and more in our latest episode of Hero Blend. This week I sit down with Silas Lesnick, associate editor at ComingSoon.net and SuperHeroHype, to talk it all through. Watch and enjoy!
