Hotel Transylvania Concept Art Reveals Cee-Lo As A Mummy
Sony Pictures will be offering two new animated efforts in 2012. The first is the swashbuckler The Pirates! Band of Misfits due out April 27th, and the second is the Halloween-themed family-comedy Hotel Transylvania, which will hit theaters this fall. Adam Sandler was the first star to sign on to the latter, and will lend his voice to Dracula, the bloodsucking owner of the monsters-only resort. Disney kid turned scandalous pop star Miley Cyrus will voice Dracula's daughter Mavis, a Goth girl who gets her dad riled when she falls for a human, who'll be voiced by SNL goofball Andy Samberg.
Directed by Samurai Jack creator Genndy Tartakovsky, this animated adventure has a sharp visual style that has been revealed through a bit of concept art for Dracula and a full CGI model of Mavis. As you might expect, Hotel Transylvania boasts a number of noteworthy celebrities, including Kevin James as Frankenstein's monster, David Spade as an invisible—and surely snarky—man, David Koechner (Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy) as Quasimodo, and rapper Cee-Lo as Murray the Mummy. Now to capitalize on Cee-Lo's appearance at the audacious Super Bowl half time show, Sony Picture Animation has revealed a look at his Mummy on their Facebook fansite:
I have to admit, I don't think I've ever seen a plump mummy before. He sort of resembles Oogie Boogie (from Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas), but with a more chipper demeanor. While there's not much to take in from this sketched head, I'm eager to see what Tartakosky will do with a full-on feature as he has had a hand in creating some wonderfully complicated and visually rich cartoon series, like the aforementioned Emmy award-winning Samurai Jack and the daffy yet clever Dexter's Laboratory. Basically, this director seems to guarantee that Hotel Transylvania will transcend its hokey Halloween premise.
Hotel Transylvania opens September 21st.
