Sony Pictures has been stringing out teasing glimpses of their upcoming animated comedy Hotel Transylvania since last fall. First came a peek at the concept art of innkeeper Dracula, followed by the reveal of his spirited daughter Mavis and a sketch of Cee-Lo's grinning mummy. Earlier this month the studio finally unveiled a fully realized look at the monstrous cast that boasts vampires, werewolves, and Frankenstein's monster, and now—at long last—we have film's the first trailer that shows us some of the above in action while outlining the premise of a young human who mistakenly stumbles into a resort made for monsters.

Now, some—myself included—have sneered at the voice cast, peopled as it is with such stale comedic talent as Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, David Spade, Kevin James and Fran Drescher. Still, there was hope that Hotel Transylvania's director, animation master Genndy Tartakovsky, who created such imaginative cartoons as Samurai Jack and Dexter's Labortatory, would manifest something incredible from the hokey premise and mediocre cast. So, what says the trailer? Have a look.

Hm.

Let's start with the positive. The shots of monsters sneaking off from their spooky homes to their vacation retreat are beautiful, inventive, and show the kind of whimsy Tartakovsky's known for. Sadly, any scene actually involving dialogue is just woefully lame. First off, Sandler's Dracula voice seems like a poor Dr. Doofenshmirtz impression. Secondly, gags like talking doorknobs and catching a skeleton in the shower are not only senseless but also comedically flat. Yet I'm less worried about such duds being in the movie, than I am that the marketing team thought they were strong enough signifiers for the film to showcase them.

Hotel Transylvania will hit theaters September 21st. Read more about it in our Blend Film Database.
