Hugo Weaving Joins Australian Thriller Mystery Road
Thanks to his performances in the Matrix movies and Captain America: The First Avenger we've grown to primarily identify Hugo Weaving as a villain. While this would be a terrible thing for most actors - who wants to be pigeonholed? - but in the case of Weaving it's hard to feel bad as he does it so damn well. Case in point we're ecstatic that he's now set to play another insidious character in the Australian thriller Mystery Road.
Written and directed by Ivan Sen, the new project is about an indigenous detective who travels back to his hometown in the outback where the murder of a young girl has taken place. Deadline, which reported the Weaving casting, says that Aaron Pedersen has already been cast in the lead role; Ryan Kwanten, best known for playing Jason Stackhouse on the HBO series True Blood, is playing a pig hunter; and Jack Thompson will play "a pastoralist who’s seen better times." Weaving's character is described as a cop who can't necessarily be trusted. Production on the film is already underway in central Queensland.
In recent years we've seen some really great stuff come out of Australia, like John Hillcoat's The Proposition and the underseen Red Hill (which, coincidentally, also featured Ryan Kwanten). Given the cast of this one, not to mention the interesting storyline, perhaps this one can join those ranks as well.
